Andy Elson has over 50 years’ engineering experience in challenging aeronautical projects including: suborbital balloons, airships, fixed-wing High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS), and space capsules.

Designed the only three commercial Solar Gliders in operation

Andy and the team have been involved in the design and build of two of the commercial Solar Gliders in operation today.  They have been heavily involved in the design and development of two successful fixed-wing suborbital platforms (Solar Gliders) including the original Zephyr, and more recently, the Astigan suborbital project with the UK’s Ordnance Survey.

Andy and the team were commissioned by SpaceX to design and build of a prototype commercial space capsule capable of carrying 5 astronauts and/or cargo to and from the International Space Station.  This vehicle, Dragon, successfully launched and docked with the ISS, on an unmanned cargo/resupply mission in May 2012 and successfully returned to Earth.

Andy’s designs have set more than 65 world records including:

• Cable & Wireless balloon – over 12,000 miles in 18 days - world endurance record for ‘any non-stop suborbital structure’ 

• 1st balloon flight over Mount Everest

Andy has two designs on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute and was awarded the prestigious Royal Aero Club Medal joining Louis Bleriot, the Wright Brothers, Alcock and Brown, Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins.
